MMM Staff Picks: Richard John Cummins’ Most Anticipated Releases of 2024

After a music year dominated by Taylor Swift, we’re now in store for… another music year dominated by Taylor Swift, with the next album of all-new material which she surprise-announced at the Grammy Awards in early February being released in the spring. We’re not sure if eighteen years it’s too soon to call 34-year-old Swift a “veteran artist,” but several legitimate veteran acts released new music, including the Rolling Stones and even Billy Joel dropping his first new original studio track in three decades. Several other acts who’ve been around for a while at least are promising a return of some sort in 2024. Here are ten (possible) upcoming releases to look forward to.

#10. Taylor Swift – The Tortured Poets Department – Release Date: April 19th

Not so much for the music, but since the entire world comes to a virtual standstill with Taylor Swift’s every move, the overall response to this one should be something to witness.

#9. Neil Young & Crazy House – Fu##in’ Up – Release Date: April 25th

Apparently, ‘Fu##in’ Up’, is going to be mostly a re-working of the 1990 album Ragged Glory, but the provocative title alone suggests that the legendary rocker plus well as his quintessential long-time backing group are going to be presenting something worth hearing.

#8. Lana Del Rey – Lasso – Release Date: September

For her tenth studio album in less than fifteen years, Lana Del Rey will do a reverse Taylor Swift move and go country. Will this new direction rope in listeners? We shall see.

#7. Faces — Title and Release Date: TBA

It’s been more than a half-century since the last Faces album and now it seems like almost as long (okay, only about two years) since Rod Stewart and Ron Wood announced they’d recorded new tracks, which we still haven’t gotten. Maybe in 2024.

#6. Kaiser Chief – The Kaiser Chiefs Easy Eighth Album – Release Date: March 1st

The Leeds, England rockers return with more of their chant-worthy Britpop in 2024 (in case you forgot which number this one is in their discography, the band saves you the Google search with the album’s title).

#5. Mark Knopfler – One River Deep – Release Date: April 12th

The forthcoming new solo album from one of rock’s all-time greatest guitarists and the former mastermind behind Dire Straits should be something to look forward to.

#4. Coldplay – Moon Music – Release Date: TBA

After nearly a quarter century of major success, will listeners still be over the moon for the London band’s first collection of all-new material in nearly three years? (We’re betting yes, but we still want to hear it first).

#3. Norah Jones – Visions – Release Date: March 8th

Since her 2002 debut album Come Away with Me soft jazz singer-songwriter Nora Jones has been one of the most noticeable quiet voices in popular music. We can’t wait to hear what she envisioned for her upcoming ninth studio album.

#2. Snoop Dogg – Missionary – Release Date: TBA

Once again collaborating with Dr. Dre, hip-hop’s favorite stoner Calvin Broadus a.k.a Snoop Doggy Dogg will hopefully show us that after more than three decades it’s still a Doggy Dogg world.

#1. Pearl Jam – Dark Matter – Release Date: April 19th

Even though since their ’90s heyday Pearl Jam’s music has always generally leaned towards the more downer side, we can’t help but wonder if the title of their upcoming album suggests they’re planning to reveal yet another, even more brooding side to their sound.
