Barbie: The Album has undoubtedly become a highly anticipated event, with the unveiling of its star-studded lineup generating buzz for months. While some fans speculated about the involvement of big names like Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Taylor Swift, their absence was not to dampen the album’s allure. Instead, we were treated to the presence of other incredible artists such as Nicki Minaj, whose association with the Barbie brand made her inclusion a resounding “yes” for everyone involved.

The album effortlessly kicks off with a track titled “Pink,” delivered by the immensely talented Lizzo. This song perfectly captures the essence of Barbie, radiating positivity and embodying everything we envision when we think of her. Its inclusion in the movie serves as a seamless extension of the narrative, enhancing the emotions conveyed on screen. Similarly, the previously released “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa is a delight to behold for pop enthusiasts. With its infectious hooks, dance-inducing beats, and Dua’s unmistakable energy, this track has become the dance song of our dreams.

While the preceding songs were specifically tailored for their roles in the film, the fourth track introduces us to the distinctive style of Charlie XCX. “Cobrastyle,” a clever sampling of Robyn’s classic hit, popularly known as the “Hey Mickey!” song, showcases Charli’s ability to infuse her signature sound into this energetic pop tune. It’s a refreshing departure from the norm and instantly grabs our attention, much like her previous album, Crash.

Billie Eilish, ever the introspective artist, takes us on a thought-provoking journey with “What
Was I Made For?” This thoughtfully composed song not only adds depth to Barbie’s transformation into a human but also offers us a glimpse into Billie’s own struggles and reflections in our world today. Meanwhile, PinkPantheress graces us with “Angel,” a track that seamlessly blends with her entire discography. It’s both on-brand and immensely enjoyable, leaving no one surprised if it were to pop up during a casual listening session.

In a delightful twist, two distinguished female rap powerhouses, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, team up once again in 2023. Their collaboration, “Barbie World,” is a concise two-minute rap masterpiece layered over a sample from Aqua’s iconic 1997 hit, “Barbie Girl.” This song serves as a tribute to everything Barbie represents – the glamorous lifestyle, opulence, beauty, and unshakable confidence. Ice Spice’s verse truly astounds, intertwining Barbie doll references with the music industry and her own competition. While Isis may have outshone Nicki this time, it by no means diminishes Nicki’s exceptional performance. She effortlessly glides through the track with finesse, delivering powerful metaphors and punchlines that captivate us from start to finish.

Ultimately, Barbie: The Album hits all the expected talking points, infusing the soundtrack with an undeniable charm that perfectly befits the iconic public figure that Barbie represents. While it adheres to certain conventions, there are enough intriguing twists and turns throughout to elevate this compilation. The album is undeniably fun, bursting with life, and brimming with hope – just like the timeless doll herself.
