Karol G: Breaking Barriers Across the Globe

With a signature blend of reggaeton, trap and pop, this young Columbian singer is breaking barriers in music. Karol G is making a name for herself as a woman of many genres. After being told that women weren’t successful in the urban music scene, Karol G strove to reach celebrity in her own way without losing sight achieving her own dreams in music. Carolina Giraldo Navarro was born on February 14, 1991. She was the youngest out of three in her family living in Medellin, Columbia. Struck with a desire to be a star, Carolina went on the Columbian X Factor when she was 14-years-old. While she didn’t go far in the show, it propelled her interest in music. She worked on her singing and got a contract with Flamingo Records. Karol G began performing gigs around town and connected with fellow Latin music star J Balvin to perform as well.

Karol G released singles over the next couple of years. “En La Playa” was released in 2007, following that release was “Por Ti” in 2008, “Dime Que Si” in 2009 and “Mil Maneras” in 2010. Carolina attended the University of Antioquia to study music. Through working with others, Karol G released “Tu Juguete” and “301.” The up-and-coming musician took to touring throughout venues in Columbia in hopes of being noticed. Karol G collaborated with Nicky Jam in 2013 to create the single “Amor de Dos.” In 2014, Carolina moved to New York City to further her career in music internationally. Karol G dropped the track “Ricos Besos” and it became a dancehall hit in Columbia. With renewed vigor Karol G pushed herself harder to finesse her sound and understanding of music. 2016 became a highlight year for the artist when she signed to Universal Music Latino. After signing to the label, she released “Casi Nada”, “Muneco de Lego”, and “Hello” featuring Ozuna. The tracks gave the artist a boost of streams and fans.

Karol G joined the children’s reality show, Pequenos Gigantes USA as a judge. In February 2017, she released “A Ella.” Bad Bunny collaborated with the artist for the breakthrough song, “Ahora Me Llama.” The track generated millions of views and streams for both artists. On October 27, 2017, Karol G released her debut album Unstoppable. With 14 tracks and seven singles, the album made the US and Latin music charts. In 2018 Karol G released the songs “Mi Cama” in May and “Culpables” in September. The remix of the songs gained even more streams. “Secreto” featuring Anuel AA was then later released in January 2019 and the song reached both US and Latin music charts. The track and music video created buzz for the release of Ocean. Released on May 3, 2019, Ocean has 16 tracks that feature eight different musicians. The tracks showcased a variety of sounds unique to the Latin artist.

Karol G got together with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin on “China.” The song reached charts on Billboard charts with millions of streams and views. She later then released the songs “Follow” featuring Anuel AA and “X” featuring the Jonas Brothers. KG0516 is the newest release from Karol G and it is officially the biggest debut for a Spanish album on the streaming platform Spotify. The album is currently ranked as the No. 1 album globally. Throughout KG0516, Karol G weaves reggaeton and pop melodies with her songwriting talent. Karol G experiments with new sounds within this latest release. Listeners can hear the difference in songs like, “Location” and “Bichota.” “Tusa” which features Nicki Minaj became a huge commercial success for the musician.

Even though people know her for the more sexual content in her songs, Karol G’s songs of romance connect with listeners and fans as well. The artist is breaking barriers in an industry dominated by people who don’t accept change. She has worked long and hard to create the music she stands by while empowering women. Karol G’s rise to stardom acts as a testament to the strength and creativity of women in the modern age of music.
