BLACKPINK: Dominating the World of K-pop

BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group consisted of four members: Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rose. They made their debut in 2016 and have created a memorable name for themselves within the music industry. The group came together under the watchful management of YG Entertainment. With hot tracks that pull from hip-hop influences, BLACKPINK is gearing up to be a powerhouse international group.

Jennie was the first member that was confirmed in the group. She appeared in several musical collaborations with artists while being made the front person of the non-named girl group. Lisa was recognized as the second official member of the group. Hailing from Thailand, Lisa is the only foreign member of the group. She was in a music video and did modeling for a while as well. Jisoo was announced as the third member of the group. Before the group, she participated in some music videos and ads. Rose was announced as the last member to complete the group in June 2016. Years prior, the young creative was a featured artist in tracks with G-Dragon.

By the end of June 2016, BLACKPINK was officially announced as a fully formed group. On August 8, 2016, the group released its debut project, Square One. The two tracks “Whistle” and “Boombayah” became huge hits within the country. “Whistle” peaked higher in digital sales and International Asian markets. BLACKPINK’s second album of singles was Square Two. “Playing With Fire” and “Stay” amassed a huge amount of streams and notoriety throughout the charts. “Playing With Fire” was the stronger single inside of the country. Due to the success of the two albums, the group achieved a huge amount of awards and notoriety.


In June 2017, “As If It’s Your Last” was released to the public. The song quickly became a chart peaking hit. The video uploaded on YouTube broke records for the most liked Korean girl group. Two months later, the group released their Japanese version of the singles. On June 15, 2018, BLACKPINK released their first EP, Square Up. The lead single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” debuted at an even higher mark than the previously released singles. The song broke into the US market and amassed millions of streams and downloads.

In October 2018, Dua Lipa released the track “Kiss and Make Up” which featured BLACKPINK. The song made musical history for the being the second time the Korean group achieved a spot on the US Billboard chart. BLACKPINK also announced they signed with Interscope Records with YG Entertainment. They released their debut studio album, Blackpink in Your Area on December 5, 2018. The nine tracks on the album are from previous singles released formerly released by the group. A later version was released that separated the Korean and Japanese versions of the songs. By April 2019, BLACKPINK released their next EP, Kill This Love. The 5-tracks on the EP made Billboard charts and generated a huge wave of streams from listeners. Later in the year, a Japanese version of the EP was released.

In May 2020 the group was featured on Lady Gaga’s latest album Chromatica on the song “Sour Candy.” The song became the highest-peaking track BLACKPINK has earned in the US. They also achieved a greater peak on music charts in the UK. Later on during the same month, the group had announced that their next studio album is schedule to be released in October of this year. It was also discussed that all four of the members would release individual projects as well. BLACKPINK has gained recognition through working in the entertainment industry individually, and now together, for years. Whether it’s from the group itself, or individual projects, listeners can be sure to continue to hear the voices of some of Korea’s greatest women in the history of K-pop.
