Calvin Harris, the Scottish DJ, record producer, singer, and songwriter has produced a few of chart topping hits like “How Deep Is Your Love”, “Sweet Nothing, and the international success “We Found Love” featuring R&B singer Rihanna. Calvin Harris and his success formula have joined forces with the former Fifth Harmony group singer, songwriter, and dancer Normani. Normani is a new solo artist since her departure from the former pop group Fifth Harmony in 2017. Her first single as a soloist, was a duet with R&B soulful singer Khalid titled “Love Lies”. The single was recorded for the movie soundtrack Love, Simon, and reached number 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. These two unique powerhouses have linked together to deliver a feel good EP to give their fans summer vibes in the fall and in the winter to come.
The first track off of the two-tracked collaboration on the EP is titled “Checklist” featuring Nigerian superstar singer WizKid, followed by a vocally solo track titled, “Slow Down.” Both tracks have a vibe and familiar feelings of Caribbean and reggae sounds, especially “Checklist”. Wizkid added some smooth beats and heavy influences of Afrobeat and dancehall to the track making it a feel good song. Normani’s effortless vocal range throughout the song sounds blissful. She even delivers a slew of spicy rap bars on the track when she boasted, “Come show me what the neck ’bout // Might show you what the check ’bout // Might show you what that net ’bout // Give it all to you if you check out”. The song feels like a flirty dance between Normani and Wizkid teasing each other with their energy and sexy dance moves. In the last verse Wizkid sings, “No bad mind, really can touch this // Gold so cold when you whine this // This straight one put you on me checklist // Me loving the love, ’cause it’s reckless”. After listening to the lyrics and the beat, it’ll have you feeling like you are on a dancefloor in the middle of a sexy tango as well.
The next track on the EP titled “Slow Down” is a half mellow and half dance-pop record. There are not many lyrics on the song due to the upbeat solo dance breaks. The song starts in an upbeat, one-step tempo where Normani is telling her lover to slow down and think about taking their relationship to the next level. Normani sings, “Everybody, everybody slow down // Everybody be on the low down // And it’s cool if you wanna be slow now, no doubt // Remember that night at your old house? // Remember that time that you broke down? // Saying that you’re happy, that you dropped that chain // Knowing that I’m the one to hold down”. The song then slows down with Normani harmonizing in a slow, deep, but seductive voice taking the vibe to a more R&B kind of feel. However, after that slow dance break, Calvin Harris then turns up the tempo, and puts you back in his usual feel good trance.
